DYI

WOOD RIVER, IL – East Alton-Wood River High School is proud to announce the launch of a brand-new course this year: DIY (Construction), taught by Mr. Sherman. This innovative double-block class is designed to give students hands-on experience with real-world building skills in a laboratory-style setting.

Currently, students in the course are working on framing two mock rooms that will serve as training labs. Within these spaces, students will learn critical construction skills including:

  • Running basic electrical wiring

  • Hanging, taping, mudding, and finishing drywall

  • Roughing in plumbing

  • Installing a shower unit

  • Flooring

  • Learning the techniques of tiling and finishing work

The woodshop has been reorganized to accommodate the new program, allowing students to stage and construct these replica rooms just like on an active job site.

“This class is more than just an elective—it’s a real-life working laboratory,” said administrators. “Students are not only engaged, but they’re gaining practical trade skills that will serve them long after high school, whether in their homes, future careers, or both.”

The DIY Construction class is part of EAWR’s ongoing commitment to preparing students for life after high school by providing diverse pathways—college, career, or trades. With the success of the inaugural year, the program is expected to grow and provide even more opportunities for students to explore construction and skilled trades.
