Dave Tedford and his Giant Unicycle

EAWR Alumnus Dave Tedford (Class of 1980) rose above his classmates in the most literal sense: Responding to a “senior project” requirement and with the help of former teachers Keith Atkinson and James Brann, Dave created a 14-foot tall unicycle! Not only was this an impressive display of machining and welding, Dave actually rode this unicycle and rode it regularly until his late-40’s. This unicycle was so impressive, that Dave was featured in a Telegraph article in 1980 with some photos showing him riding it in Eastgate Plaza.


In a desire to give back to his alma mater, Dave drove the unicycle up from his home in South Carolina and presented it as a gift to the high school. He presented it to current Welding teacher, Jake Sitze (Class of 2003) and his afternoon classes. Dave also took the opportunity to speak with the students and to answer some questions.
